Live Theatre

I hate that people think going to the theatre is a special occasion. I wish people would treat it as normally as going to the cinema.

Dear Kids,

SBR and I did another father/daughter thing (we went to see Frozen II together back in 2019, just before the pandemic hit and long before I started this blog). SBR has really gotten into the theatre, and I also enjoy the theatre—much more so now that I’ve been away from it for so very long. There’s really no reason we don’t go more often. I mean, we do live in the nation’s capital, and we have some great theatre venues here; not the least of which is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

And that’s exactly where we went. SBR has been dying to see Dear Evan Hansen for some time, and now that it’s at the Kennedy Center, I didn’t really have many excuses left as to why we couldn’t go. So off we went, just the two of us, to see a show that many said wasn’t age-appropriate for her since it dealt with suicide. Whatever, she’s been watching “Ted Lasso” and “Derry Girls” for ages. Besides it really wasn’t about suicide. Yes, someone killed themself and another contemplates it, but it’s really a plot driver more than a theme or topic discussed in depth.

All in all, we had a great time. SBR loved loved loved the show, and I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it too. I was laughing a lot more than I expected, and I have to admit, I left the show humming some of the tunes (a sign in my book of a successful musical). We gave it a 4 out of 5. So we definitely recommend it.

Love,

Aba
